Mechanized production and commercialization of farming of sesame and black habilla

Community development by improving agricultural production

Colonia Barbero, San Pedro

DAP (Agricultural Development of Paraguay, in Spanish) is a company dedicated to the production of commodities (soybean, corn and sunflower). Since 2000, the company has developed projects with neighboring communities, aiming towards not only economic, but also environmental and social goals.

The experience of DAP with neighboring producers represented an important contribution of knowledge for designing the FIDEI.

With FIDEI funds, projects with producers of Colonia Barbero -a peasant settlement located in San Pedro with over 50 years of history- were implemented. FIDEI projects strengthened in 2014 the sesame production for oil extraction; and in 2015, the farming of black habilla* (*a legume); the latter, with 18 families from the following neighborhoods: Santa Lucía, San Antonio, Quiindy, Inmaculada and Panchito López.

In the process of mechanized farming of 42 hectares, families provided the labor for the elimination of trunks, whereas the Fund provided the machines and technical assistance for the successful seeding, fertilization and pest prevention.
